Charline Depoorter is a postdoctoral researcher in the Sustainability Research Group at the University of Basel where she investigates the implementation of sustainable supply chains due diligence legislations (such as the EU Deforestation Regulation or the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive) in a project led by Prof. Grabs. More broadly, her research focuses on global governance for sustainable development, with a particular interest in the design and implementation of trade-based sustainability instruments and in tropical agri-food systems such as cocoa, coffee and palm oil.

Prior to joining the University of Basel, Charline Depoorter received her PhD from KU Leuven, Belgium, with a thesis on the design and effectiveness of voluntary sustainability standards as private transnational instruments for sustainable development in agri-food and wood sectors. During her PhD, she conducted field work in Indonesia, focusing on the implementation of voluntary sustainability standards in the cocoa sector. Prior to her PhD, Charline completed a Master’s degree in International Politics at KU Leuven and a Master’s degree in Global Environment, Politics and Society at the University of Edinburgh. She also has work experience as an Associate Economic Affairs Officer at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
