From deserts to climate change, from heritage to religion: the Forum Basiliense Lecture Series 2025 dives deep into the Anthropocene.
In response to the accelerated pace of social change in the world, the University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university, has founded the Forum Basiliense as a new research center and platform for interdisciplinary dialogue. The aim is to promote exchange and collaboration between the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
In its inaugural year, the focus is on the subject of the Anthropocene. This term has become increasingly important in both the natural sciences and the humanities over the last two decades. It describes the profound planetary changes triggered by human activities - from industrial upheavals to climate change - and challenges us to rethink sustainability, environmental justice and the tension between ecological and economic necessities.
The 2025 lecture series provides insights into these debates and brings together international fellows and invited experts. For the coming year 2026, the focus will be on the subject of "Conflict and Cooperation" - a highly topical field that is more dependent on transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary exchange than almost any other.
The Forum Basiliense lecture seriestakes place on Thursdays from 12:15-13:45 at Spalenberg 65 (1st floor).
👉 All interested parties are cordially invited to take part in the Forum Basiliense lecture series and contribute to this dialog.
