Comparative research often faces a familiar dilemma: rich qualitative insights versus systematic analytical clarity. Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) bridges this gap. In this seminar, Dr. Axel Marx, Deputy Director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (KU Leuven), will guide participants through the principles and steps of QCA — from basic concepts to model specification — in a clear and accessible way.
The seminar is designed for researchers interested in comparative case study design and analysis, and for anyone curious about the potential and limitations of QCA as an analytic technique. The session is open to all disciplines, and no prior knowledge of QCA is required.
About the speaker
Dr. Axel Marx studied sociology and political science in Leuven, Hull, and Cambridge. He has authored over 300 academic publications in leading international journals and edited volumes. His research covers voluntary sustainability standards, EU trade and sustainability policy, business and human rights, and comparative case methods. His influential papers on model specification in QCA are widely cited across disciplines. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Academic Advisory Council of the UN Forum on Sustainability Standards and is a Board Member of Evidensia.
